Alexander Volkanovski Shuts Down Retirement Rumors

Alexander Volkanovski doesn’t have any retirement plans yet.

Volkanovski is scheduled to defend his featherweight title in a rematch against Diego Lopes at UFC 325 on Jan. 31 in front of a home crowd at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia. Volkanovski recently shut down all talks of this being his last outing. “The Great” plans to defend his title against contenders like Leron Murphy or Movsar Evloev if he beats Lopes. However, Volkanovski plans to put on a showing against Lopes that will make Murphy or Evloev think twice before fighting him.

Careful What You Wish For

“I’m 37 years old now. Lot of people are obviously gonna be questioning that,” Volkanovski told 10 News. “I want to show them that I can still take out these guys… I’m seeing [retirement rumors] everywhere as well. I don’t know where did that come from. It hasn’t been planned to be my last fight so you don’t really need to worry about that. I think you’ve got to just take it as it goes from here on.

“… Maybe send a message to your Lerone Murphys and Movsars that have been calling for this fight, like: Be careful what you wish for. That’s the type of statement I feel like I’m gonna make Feb. 1. Let’s see how badly they want it after that performance.”

Volkanovski (27-4) defended his featherweight title five times before losing it to Ilia Topuria last year. Volkanovski won the vacant title against Lopes (27-7) earlier this year after Topuria moved up to lightweight.
