Alexander Volkov advises Jailton Almeida to change his style if he wants a title shot.

Volkov took on Almeida in a heavyweight matchup at UFC 321 on Saturday in Abu Dhabi. Almeida took Volkov down at will and controlled him for nearly 11 minute, while barely landing any damage. Meanwhile, Volkov tried to land damage at every possible opportunity, even working with short elbows from the bottom position. Volkov ultimately walked away with a somewhat controversial split-decision win.

However, Volkov claims he was expecting the scorecards to tilt towards him. “Drago” remembers reading in the rulebook that there are no points allotted for just holding one’s opponent.

Volkov: ‘I Tried to Do Active Work’

“I was expecting this… I read the rules and I noticed one thing that there are no points for just holding your opponent on the ground,” Volkov told Full Send MMA. “There are points for some active work, so I tried to do active work. Doesn’t matter where I was, on the ground I tried to punch him from the bottom.”

Volkov was also baffled by Almeida’s sheer unwillingness to land any strikes. Volkov believes “Malhadinho” needs to change his style, as the UFC seemingly don’t want someone like him fighting for the title.

“I don’t think the UFC wants a fighter like him fighting for the belt,” Volkov said. “Anyway, he should little bit change his style and do some striking skills. But yeah, it was funny how he just avoided any punch. Just jumping to the ground.”

While Almeida is 2-2 in his last four, Volkov is 5-1 in his last six and rebounded from a loss against Ciryl Gane with his win at UFC 321.
