While she was disappointed to learn that her title fight against Kayla Harrison at UFC 324 had been postponed, Amanda Nunes still has her eyes on the prize.

Harrison withdrew from the UFC 324 co-headliner a little more than one week before the event to undergo surgery on her neck. That left Nunes without without an opponent after the two-division ended her retirement in hopes of regaining UFC gold.

“The news about Kayla going through surgery and everything made me sad because I prepared myself a lot,” Nunes said in a video on the UFC’s social media. “My training camp was perfect. I was super prepared physically, mentally, spiritually. So it’s hard not to get sad with all of that. But what can we do, right? That’s not under our control. So now we just wait and see what the UFC is doing about that.”

Nunes initially retired following a victory over Irene Aldana at UFC 289 in June 2023. She was motivated to begin a comeback when Kayla Harrison won the bantamweight crown last year. For the athlete regarded by many as the women’s MMA GOAT, fighting for an interim belt was never an option following Harrison’s withdrawal from UFC 324.

Undisputed or Bust

“People are talking about an interim belt or fighting someone else and everything, but guys, that’s not happening,” Nunes said. “I only fight for the regular belt. If the UFC vacates the belt and finds an opponent, then I fight. But no interim belt for me. I also don’t want to fight another opponent now. That’s not an option. So let’s see if we wait for Kayla or not. And see what’s going to happen.

“But one thing is for sure: I feel good. I’m training a lot. I’m motivated. I’m strong. And I’m 37 years old. Full of energy. ‘The Lioness’ is still hunting. I’m ready to get my belt back against whoever shows up.”

UFC CEO Dana White recently said that he expects to rebook Harrison vs. Nunes when the reigning champ recovers from surgery. There is no timetable for Harrison’s return.
