Amir Albazi did everything in his power to make it to fight night on Saturday, but it wasn’t meant to be.
The flyweight released a statement via social media regarding his withdrawal from the UFC Vegas 108 headliner against Tatsuro Taira.

“I’m heartbroken to announce that I won’t be fighting on Aug. 2. I finished my whole training camp and did everything I could, but I wasn’t medically cleared in time,” Albazi wrote on Instagram. “The UFC and the commission made the call for my safety. I respect their decision even though I wanted to step in to that cage and take care of business.
“I’ll be back stronger and better. This is just a setback, not the end. Thank you to my fans, my team, and everyone who supports me through the ups and downs.”
Albazi Has Dealt with Previous Health Issues
Albazi did not further elaborate on the reason behind his exit. The promotion announced on Monday that the cancellation of the main event was due to “injury.” The 31-year-old Iraqi last appeared at UFC Edmonton in November, where he had a six-bout winning streak snapped in a decision loss to Brandon Moreno. Albazi has dealt with serious health issues in the past, including an irregular heartbeat and a neck injury that significantly limited movement in his left arm. Both of those ailments required surgeries in previous years.
Taira will remain in the UFC Vegas 108 main event against “Road to UFC” winner Hyun Sung Park. The card takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and begins at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT. The event airs in its entirety on ESPN+.
