Hernandez (15-3) was a sizeable favorite going into his last matchup against Strickland (28-1) this past February. However, Strickland completely neutralized Hernandez’s wrestling and picked him apart on the feet to score an upset stoppage win in the third round. The win earned Strickland a immediate title shot against Khamzat Chimaev, whom he dethroned in another massive upset at UFC 328 last month.

Meanwhile, Hernandez is now set to headline UFC Sacramento against Gregory Rodrigues (19-6) on Aug. 22. Hernandez is currently training with Strickland for his upcoming fight. Hernandez praised Strickland for helping him. Hernandez revealed that while Strickland had originally asked him to train together before his fight against Chimaev, “Fluffy” was injured at the time. However, Hernandez had promised Strickland that they would eventually train together. While Hernandez trains at the MMA Gold Fight Team in California, he is doing a lot of this camp at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas. Hernandez has made arrangements to frequently train with Strickland, who is based out of the Xtreme Couture gym in Las Vegas.
‘Tough as Hell’
“He’s a cool dude, man. I got nothing bad to say about the guy,” Hernandez said on “The Ariel Helwani Show.” “He’s been helping me, and I’ve been training with him… He actually hit me up for the Khamzat fight, but I was injured at the time and couldn’t go out to help him. I was like, ‘I’ll eventually train with you.’ I’m going to be in Vegas a lot more for camp this time, so we set it up so we could train together… That motherf—er’s tough as hell, bro. He’s a tough son of a bitch.”
