Kevin Ferguson Jr.’s victory against Craig Campbell has been overturned to a no contest due to the use of illegal strikes.
The Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulation made the ruling on Monday after determining that Campbell was hit with illegal blows in the 160-pound catchweight affair at Bellator 232. MMAFighting.com was first to report the news.
“Baby Slice” stuffed a takedown against the fence early on in the bout before landing a barrage of elbows that knocked Campbell out 38 seconds into the contest. A few of the strikes appeared to land on the back of the head, while others — including one to the jaw that rendered Campbell unconscious — were legal. During the action, referee Bryan Miner did not indicate that any of the blows were illegal.
MTDAR president Mike Mazzulli sent a letter to Bellator president Scott Coker indicating that the commission used instant replay to change the result to a no contest.
”In the case of the above-referenced bout, upon review of the tape, we have determined that the injury that stopped the bout was the result of an accidental foul; elbows to the back of the head,” Mazzulli wrote. “Since the bout was stopped in the first round of a bout scheduled for three rounds, we have determined that the result of the bout must be changed to ‘no-contest.’”
Ferguson Jr., the son of the late Kimbo Slice, is now 3-2 with one no contest, with all of his bouts taking place under the Bellator banner. Bellator 232 took place on Saturday at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
