In June, former UFC welterweight Ben Askren had to be hospitalized due to a case of severe pneumonia. The athlete fell into a coma while in the hospital, and after receiving a double lung transplant, he received his discharge at the end of July.

The funk-style wrestler has been very vocal about his condition, constantly sharing updates and serving as motivation for others to recover from their illnesses and injuries. He regularly appears on Monday for a series of video posts each week called “Mental Monday” with inspirational messages, memories and other ways to jog his brain while he gets better physically.
He Just Couldn’t Help Himself
On Thursday, Askren posted a surprise update that he had returned to the gym. Granted, the capacity in which he was training was limited to less strenuous activity like takedown drills as he worked his way into it, but Askren was on what he considered his “death bed” mere months ago and is already back training to get back in shape. At 41 years of age, he may not be preparing to return to competition, but he nevertheless wants to get back to work.
“So [Rudis Wrestling, by way of Trihex Athletic Apparel] sent me a pair of shoes and I just couldn’t help myself…4 months ago I was on my death bed. 3 months ago I couldn’t stand unassisted. 2 months ago I was still using a walker. What’s your excuse?? Tie them up tight and let’s get to work. Couldn’t be more grateful to be back at it and for all of the support the community gave me during such a hard time.”
