Green posted on his Instagram Stories shortly after news broke on Thursday that he had sustained a serious injury that ejected him from UFC 319. “King” was booked against Diego Ferreira, and the still-undisclosed injury forced the promotion to reschedule it to at a later date.
Green had plans on ending a two-loss skid at this event, where Mauricio Ruffy and Paddy Pimblett put him away in back-to-back outings. Before those defeats, Green had rattled off three wins opposite a single defeat, beating Tony Ferguson, Grant Dawson and Jim Miller to remain as a fringe contender in his weight class at the age of 38. Along the way, Jalin Turner turned him away, preventing “King” from vaulting into the top 15.
A Pained Green: “I’ve Got the F—ing Crutches Right Here”
Since debuting with the promotion in 2013—and even before, during his days in Strikeforce, Green regularly withdrew from matches usually due to injury. Of note, “King” was once booked against Miller as early as 2014, and multiple cancelations including Green pulling out after the UFC 258 weigh-ins made it take a decade for them to finally meet. It is the first time Green has willingly pulled out of a match since the 2021 weigh-in scare, not counting his failed drug test that bumped him off UFC 276.
“I worked so hard to get here,” an exasperated Green said. “So hard. I went through a lot of bulls–t to get here. And back in the day, I’ve had pullouts. But somewhere along the line, I said, ‘I’m not ever pulling out of a fight.’ If I gotta f—in’ limp my ass there, I’ll limp into the cage, but I’m never pulling out. This one is a little bit different, I can’t even f—ing walk, guys.”
The crestfallen fighter continued after a pause, “If I had a broken hand, I wouldn’t say [anything], I would fight. And so, I’m sorry to anybody I let down. I let myself down even more than that. It just sucks to take this stuff, I’ve got things to do, I’ve got people that look up to me and need me and [to] take care of. Got the f—ing crutches right here, [I] f—ing bulls–t you not. It is what it is. I’m really sorry, and thank you for everyone who really rides with me. This s–t is really appreciated, and I’m really sorry.”
