The Ultimate Fighter 27 winner Brad Katona is now a free agent.
Katona, 29, announced on social media that he has been released by the UFC after a 2-2 stint with the promotion. The news was first mentioned as a possibility by Bloody Elbow and later confirmed by TSN.
“My release from the UFC came as a surprise, but it hasn’t changed my passion or drive to continuing my pursuit of being the best in the world,” Katona wrote.
Katona, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, became the first Canadian to win a traditional edition of TUF when he appeared on the “Undefeated” season in 2018 and won the show’s featherweight tournament (his countrymen Chad Laprise and Elias Theodorou also won their respective tournaments on TUF: Nations, but that season was comprised entirely of Canadians and Australians).
He won his first post-TUF fight, defeating Matthew Lopez by unanimous decision, then dropped back-to-back decisions to Merab Dvalishvili and Hunter Azure. Katona’s pro record sits at 8-2.
Katona did not give any indication as to what promotion he may sign with next.

With the news out now I figured I should address it. My release from the UFC came as a surprise but it hasn’t changed my passion or drive to continuing my pursuit of being the best in the world. Originally I wanted to forego announcing my release until I had something tangible and exciting to produce alongside it. Fortunately I have a great team behind me helping to chart out the path to becoming the best version of myself.
