After losing to Alexia Thainara in March, proud Liverpudlian Molly McCann hung up her gloves. As it turns out, her “retirement” solely meant that she planned on leaving MMA competition behind. Less than four months after supposedly departing combat sports, Matchroom Boxing announced on Thursday that she has signed with their ranks. While “Meatball” dabbled in amateur boxing when younger, she had never turned professional. Her pro boxing debut, as well as her fighting weight and opponent, has yet to be announced.
First starting her training in striking as a youth, the longtime flyweight that briefly dabbled at 115 pounds at the end of her career made her bones knocking women out. With half of her pro MMA wins coming inside the distance, all but one of those were via strikes. Of note, she wrecked Luana Carolina and Hannah Goldy with back-to-back spinning elbows, making her the first fighter in UFC history to ever achieve consecutive wins in such a fashion.

McCann, leaving behind a record of 7-7 as a UFC fighter, joins a growing number of former MMA athletes who moved on towards the end of their careers to go box. Former bantamweight queen Holly Holm ended her UFC deal after a one-sided loss to Kayla Harrison in April 2024. Rather than continue on in stagnant divisions with the promotion, she shifted back to boxing. Returning at the end of June, she ran circles around Yolanda Vegas and cruised to pick up a $100,000 paycheck. McCann will be looking to do something similar, still maintaining considerable name recognition and popularity in the United Kingdom. Many other names ranging from Anderson Silva to Francis Ngannou have done the same the last several years.
