Chan Sung Jung to Undergo Eye Surgery, Targets Summer Octagon Return

Featherweight contender Chan Sung Jung will undergo eye surgery in hopes of a summer UFC return.

Jung informed MMAjunkie.com that he hopes to have the procedure completed within the next few weeks. The Korean Zombie struggled with double vision throughout his camp for Frankie Edgar ahead of their bout at UFC Fight Night 165 on Dec. 21.

“Objects would overlap vertically, and it was really difficult to spar at first,” Jung told Sherdog.com earlier this month. “But I realized that my brain was slowly adjusting to how my eyes were perceiving things. It’s very rare for an athlete to go into a fight without any injuries or problems after camp. For this particular camp, the problem just happened to be my eyes. I was connected to a doctor approved by the UFC, because I had to know whether this was going to affect me in the long run. I was told it wasn’t going to get worse from being hit, so I continued adapting to seeing with the double vision for the sake of taking the opportunity that lay before me.”

Despite those issue, Jung defeated Edgar via first-round technical knockout in South Korea for his second consecutive UFC triumph. Jung elected to have surgery after getting a second opinion on his eye from a doctor in Phoenix.

“Recently, it has been more important for me to figure out my double vision issue,” Jung told MMAJunkie. “It took a long time to get medical exams done and there was a difference with diagnoses between doctors in Korea and Phoenix.”

Jung ranks as one of the top contenders in the division, and ideally, he would like to have a title shot when he is ready to return to action in July or August.

“Right now, my focus goes on [Alexander] Volkanovski,” Jung said. “If it would not work for me to fight the champion, I would be interested in fighting [Brian] Ortega – but I want to make sure. At this moment, I want to fight Volkanovski.”
