McGregor injured his knee while throwing the first strike of his rematch with Max Holloway at UFC 329. The Irishman then struggled to stay upright and repeatedly fell over, prompting a referee stoppage over a minute into the bout. Dr. Sutterer, who has not treated or evaluated McGregor in person, has now shared his assessment.

Brian Sutterer breaks down Conor McGregor’s UFC 329 knee injury signs, ACL concerns and possible recovery outlook
The initial suspicion was that McGregor blew out his ACL at UFC 329. The commentators speculated an ACL injury and UFC CEO Dana White did the same at the post-fight presser.
McGregor recently shared a video of himself addressing fans, drawing a reaction from Dr. Sutterer on X. The latter noted that the former two-division champion not wearing a brace is a good sign and that his seating position means it likely isn’t a high-grade injury.
“Lack of a brace (assuming he didn’t just take it off for the video) means no high-grade collateral ligament injury (MCL/LCL). Means nothing about ACL and meniscus,” Dr. Sutterer wrote. “Range of motion being at least 90deg of flexion and looking relatively comfortable is good.”
McGregor has updated fans on Instagram, revealing that the results of his medical scans will soon clarify the extent of the injury. With one fight left on his current UFC contract, “Notorious” has vowed to stick with his new lifestyle despite the loss, focus on recovery and return to fight out his contract when fit.
