Conor McGregor rarely bites his tongue and that definitely includes when he’s taking aim at a former opponent like Floyd Mayweather.
On Thursday, Mayweather got into a physical altercation with YouTube celebrity turned boxer Jake Paul following a press conference where the undefeated former multi-division champion was promoting his upcoming exhibition bout with Logan Paul.
While Logan is the one fighting Mayweather, it was Jake who snatched a hat off the head of the 44-year-old boxing legend, which then led to mayhem backstage at the press conference as security guards intervened with media swarming to get photos and videos of the incident.
Just hours later, McGregor took to Instagram to slam Mayweather for the sideshow fight he’s booked against Paul rather than actually coming out of retirement to face a legitimate threat, which he believes would earn a much bigger payday.
“Hey Leonard Ellerbe, what the f*ck is Floyd at?” McGregor said while tagging Mayweather’s long time business partner. “The kid curled up, didn’t fight back once, and Floyd is still running around acting the tough guy. The kid actually just pulled this shambles of a situation Floyd is in out of the drain for him. He should thank him. It’s embarrassing!
“Pro to pro it’s embarrassing. He will not scratch $10 [million] for this fight and he knows it. It was cancelled once already. The world is watching this on Twitter. He’d fight a half decent pro and command $20 [million] upwards, yet it’s this sh*t. Whatever way you spin this, it’s sad. Fight someone for real, on your record, or f*ck off mate. Slap head!”
Mayweather actually retired from active competition after moving to 50-0 with his 10th round TKO against McGregor back in 2017. Since that time, he’s been attached to exhibition bouts — first with a lopsided performance against an overmatched Tenshin Nasukawa in Japan and now with the Paul matchup booked in June.
Still widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time, Mayweather has been adamant that his real fighting days are behind him but he’s still commanding an audience for these exhibition bouts, including the one with Paul, which will air on Showtime pay-per-view.
Obviously, McGregor doesn’t see much value in beating up social influencers, which stands to reason why he’s never acknowledged multiple call outs from Jake Paul over the past year.
McGregor has teased his potential return to the sport of boxing as well in the future including a possible fight against Manny Pacquiao but right now his only focus remains on July 10 when he faces Dustin Poirier in a trilogy at UFC 264.
