Corey Anderson Claims UFC Denied Title Shot Due to Limited Social Media Presence

Corey Anderson claims the Ultimate Fighting Championship didn’t give him a title shot due to a lack of social media following.

Anderson claims he was riding a three-fight winning streak in the UFC in 2018 when he was approached by executive Hunter Campbell. Campbell allegedly told Anderson that he was undeniably deserving of a title shot against then light heavyweight champ Jon Jones. However, Campbell said he would be robbed of the title shot since he didn’t have enough social media followers.

UFC Exec Told Anderson It’s About Who Puts ‘Butts in Seats’

“Hunter Campbell, when I left the UFC before the Johnny Walker fight, he had a conversation with me and he told me, ‘We can’t give you a title fight, but it’s 100% that you deserve a title fight,. We can’t give it to you because your social media isn’t there,” Anderson told MMAFighting.com. “It’s not about who’s the best anymore. It’s about who’s going to put butts in the seats. And the fans determine who’s the best fighter off who has the biggest social media.”

The proper use of social media has fueled the emergence of stars such as Conor McGregor. However, Anderson was never one to trash talk or showboat. Anderson would go on to knock out Walker in his next outing before losing to Jan Blachowicz in his last UFC fight.

“Overtime” then signed with Bellator MMA where he became champion. Anderson also noted that despite his knockout win over Walker, the Brazilian has more stardom due to his social media presence. Anderson will look to make it 2-0 in a rematch against Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov at PFL Champions Series 3 on Oct. 3 at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, UAE.
