Dana White opens up about Fabricio Werdum-Colby Covington altercation: ‘You just can’t go around assaulting people’

UFC fighters Fabricio Werdum and Colby Covington got into an altercation outside a hotel in Sydney, Australia, just days before the UFC’s recent event in the city. On Tuesdya, UFC president Dana White finally commented on the situation.

Werdum, a former UFC heavyweight champion, was caught on tape throwing a bag containing a boomerang at Covington, a welterweight fighter, after both fighters exchanged a few words. “Vai Cavalo” wasn’t happy with Covington’s comments about Brazil.

White, who wasn’t in Australia for the Fight Night event, discussed the situation during a media lunch in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

“No, I don’t laugh, that’s not funny,” White said of his first reaction when he heard about the boomerang. “Believe me, I get it, I get it that Colby disrespected Brazil and all the Brazilian people. I know how Brazilians get about that stuff. You just can’t go around assaulting people, you know? You just can’t do it. It’s bad.”

White admitted that he and Werdum “do not have a good relationship at all,” but has finally decided to sit down and talk to the former champion.

“It’s just a continued, this is what this guy does,” White said. “He almost fights Tony Ferguson at the media lunch. There’s a laundry list of me and Werdum.

“When I was driving here today to meet you guys, Werdum texted me and said ‘I wanna come out, I wanna meet, I wanna sit down.’ I haven’t been willing to meet with him for a while now. And I texted him back and said ‘let’s do it.’ So me and Werdum are gonna sit down, try to hug and make up.”

Werdum competed in the main event of UFC Sydney, just six weeks after submitting Walt Harris at UFC 216, and defeated Marcin Tybura via unanimous decision.
