Dana White: ‘The best thing’ for Conor McGregor is waiting for Khabib vs. Gaethje winner

If Conor McGregor wants to wait to fight the winner of the lightweight title unification fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje, it appears that option is open to him.

According to UFC president Dana White, he would actually advise McGregor to sit and wait for that fight to play out later this year before making any decision regarding his next move.

McGregor return to action back in January, made short work of Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and then declared his intentions to stay busy throughout 2020.

Of course no one could have predicted a global pandemic that would throw the entire UFC schedule into upheaval. Even now that the promotion is back in business, no crowds are allowed to attend events, which would certainly hurt the UFC considering the kind of money McGregor draws every time he competes.

As of now there’s been no word on when McGregor might return but White would prefer to see the Irish superstar bide his time before making any decisions.

“The best thing for him — I’m not saying this is what’s going to happen — but in my opinion, he lets this Gaethje-Khabib fight play out and then he fights the winner,” White said on the Talk the Talk podcast. “I think that’s the smartest move for him.

“But you know him, maybe he wants to fight before that and if he does, we can figure something out. I think that’s the move for him right now.”

McGregor has continued training during the pandemic but there’s been no real movement on when his next fight might get booked.

With Nurmagomedov fighting Gaethje next, the list of top ranked lightweights available for McGregor isn’t that long but he could still revisit a trilogy with Nate Diaz or build towards a showdown with “BMF” champion Jorge Masvidal.

Obviously, White prefers the third option where McGregor would just sit and wait for the lightweight title unification bout, which is rumored for September, and then he could fight the winner later in the year.
