In the main event, welterweights collide as Leon Shahbazyan (171) takes on Phil Rowe (171). The older brother of Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight Edmen Shahbazyan, L. Shahbazyan is 7-1 as a pro with all seven wins coming by stoppage. The 23-year-old was slated to compete earlier this season but was removed from the card due to medical reasons.
Rowe, meanwhile, is 6-2 and riding a six-fight winning streak in promotions such as V3 Fights, Battleground MMA and CageSport MMA. He last fought back in March, where he submitted Matt McKeon by second-round guillotine choke.
One fighter came in heavy: Steve Garcia (139.5), who weighed in over the bantamweight limit by 3.5 pounds, and he will forfeit 35 percent of his purse to Desmond Torres.
Dana White’s Contender Series takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Aug. 20, and airs on ESPN+ at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
