Ex-UFC Champ Frankie Edgar Ends Retirement to Make BKFC Debut

Frankie Edgar will return to combat sports for the first time in nearly three years this fall.

The former UFC lightweight champion is coming out of retirement to face Jimmie Rivera at BKFC 82 on Oct. 4 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Ariel Helwani first reported the bout on social media Monday night. Edgar’s BKFC debut must still be approved by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board.

Edgar Compiled a Notable UFC Victory List

A native of Toms River, N.J., Edgar last competed at UFC 281, where he suffered a first-round knockout loss to Chris Gutierrez in a bantamweight bout in November 2022. “The Answer” also competed at lightweight and featherweight during his 28-bout UFC tenure. He earned notable victories over the likes of B.J. Penn, Gray Maynard, Sean Sherk, Charles Oliveira, Cub Swanson, Urijah Faber, Chad Mendes and Yair Rodriguez during his Octagon career.

Rivera, meanwhile, hasn’t competed in the UFC since 2021, but he has compiled a 2-2-1 record under the BKFC banner in recent years. His most recent appearance come in November 2024, when he dropped a unanimous decision to Kai Stewart.

BKFC 82 is headlined by a clash between Mike Perry and Jeremy Stephens.
