Ciryl Gane was completely dominant in his second Octagon appearance, as he overwhelmed Don’Tale Mayes en route to a third-round submission at UFC Fight Night 162 in Singapore on Saturday.
Gane outlanded his opponent by a 94-to-32 count in significant strikes and went 3-for-3 on takedowns before tapping out Mayes with a heel hook at the 4:46 mark of Round 3. Despite being in control throughout, Gane, a Frenchman who is known for training with top contender Francis Ngannou, saw some room for improvement.
“I’m about 75 percent satisfied with my performance,” Gane said. “I wanted to finish the fight in the first round. But he’s big, so I knew it was going to be hard. At the end, I just took the opportunity when it came, to get the submission. We worked on it, so it wasn’t too surprising for us.”
Gane is now 2-0 in the Las Vegas-based promotion and 5-0 as a professional overall, with all of his victories coming inside the distance. In a shallow heavyweight division, new contenders are always welcomed, and Gane appears to be an interesting new talent. Given his lack of experience, Gane should continue to grow with each outing.
“I’ll show more in the next fight. I think I can give more volume punches, combos, and show my wrestling,” he said.
“I feel good, because I’m going home with the green. I would like to fight again quickly.”
