Garry is scheduled to challenge Makhachev for the welterweight title in the main event at UFC 330 on Aug. 15 at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. Garry believes his rangy movement will pose Makhachev problems that he has never faced before. While Garry went to wrestling camp in Georgia, Makhachev recently said that wrestling cannot be learned in a few months. However, Garry hopes that Makhachev takes him down so that he can prove a point. The Irishman vows to defeat Makhachev in wrestling, which is the Dagestani champion’s bread and butter.
‘I’m Going to Bounce Him on His Skull’
“He’s never fought someone as long and tall as me,” Garry said on Instagram. “He’s not fought someone as fast as me. He’s never fought someone that has the distance management, the boxing capability, the head movement that I do. And also takedown defense. He might get me down, I hope he does. Because I want to prove to the world that he can’t submit me. I want to prove to the world that I can get back up. I want to prove to the world that I can beat him in his own world. I don’t care how long he has trained in that area. I don’t care if he’s an internationally recognized master of sambo or not. I’m going to bounce him on his skull. I’m going to take his title. I’m gonna take his throne. And I’m gonna finish that consecutive win streak. And I’ll always be the guy that stopped history from happening.”
Makhachev (28-1) defended his lightweight title four times, the most in the division’s history, before moving up to welterweight, where he dominantly dethroned Jack Della Maddalena to win the title this past November. Meanwhile, Garry (17-1) went undefeated in his first eight UFC outings before suffering his lone professional loss against fellow welterweight contender Shavkat Rakhmonov. “The Future” has since rebounded with wins over Carlos Prates and Belal Muhammad.
