Makhachev recently received a hero’s welcome after returning to his homeland for the first time since his welterweight title win over Jack Della Maddalena. Sergey Melikov, head of the Republic of Dagestan, presented Makhachev with a gift and bestowed state honors upon him in a special ceremony. Makhachev was gifted artwork made by the People’s Artist of the Republic of Dagestan, Mukhtar Kambulatov – an oil-painted portrait of himself holding his two UFC belts.

“This is a portrait painted with oil,” Melikov said. “I think this portrait will enhance your family gallery and this is the story that will actually be present in your home. So allow me to present this portrait.”
Makhachev was further honored with an order of merit for achievements in physical culture and sports in the Republic of Dagestan. Melikov joked that the Republic of Dagestan will soon have to invent new medals to keep up with Makhachev’s achievements.
Belts and Awards
“Islam not only took all the belts in the world, he also took all the state awards,” Melikov said. “Another victory in Dagestan and we’ll have to create another medal for you. But we will definitely do that.”
Makhachev (28-1) defended the UFC lightweight title four times, the most in the division’s history, before moving up to win the welterweight title earlier this month. Makhachev previously earned the Order “For Merit to the Republic of Dagestan” after beating Charles Oliveira in 2022 to win the lightweight title. Makhachev also earned the Sali Suleiman medal, the Dagestan Ministry of Sports’ highest award, for his first title defense against Alexander Volkanovski.
