Makhachev originally used the phrase with his close friend and teammate Daniel Cormier. Makhachev suggested that the former UFC two-division champion send his son “two to three years Dagestan and forget” to teach him wrestling. It has since become a popular meme that is brought up whenever anything wrestling-related pops up in MMA.

Makhachev recently had the phrase engraved on a knife along with his signature. The former lightweight champ posted a video of the artwork on his Instagram Stories.

Makhachev also recently introduced the first pro fighter who came under his wing for the “two to three years Dagestan” project. Undefeated Mexican fighter Brahyan Zurcher is in Dagestan and claims to be training for his UFC debut at Noche UFC in September.
Makhachev defended his lightweight title four times, the most in the history of the division, before moving up to welterweight. The Dagestani legend awaits a welterweight title shot against Jack Della Maddalena in the near future.
