Islam Makhachev Wants to Learn Farriery After Retirement

Islam Makhachev wants to take care of his horses by himself. 

The former lightweight champion is scheduled to challenge Jack Della Maddalena for the welterweight title in the main event at UFC 322 on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. Will Harris from Anatomy of a Fighter has been documenting Makhachev’s camp heading into UFC 322. 

Makhachev revealed that he wants to go to a farrier school in the U.S. after his retirement from MMA. The Dagestani star owns a ranch with over 20 horses, which have to be taken care of. While Makhachev now has to pay a professional farrier to take care of the hooves, he wants to do it by himself after his retirement. The UFC legend doesn’t intend on earning any money through farriery but just wants to learn the craft for the love of it.

“When I am retired, we gonna go, we have some state, I forget – you can learn how to do this,” Makhachev told Harris. “I have 20 horses and I have to pay people to take care, but I can do by myself… Not for money, I just enjoy.”

When asked how much time does it take to clean a hoof, Makhachev honestly replied “Professional guy – one leg by two [to] three minutes. But for me, one leg is gonna take two [to] three years.”

Makhachev (27-1) recorded the most title defenses in lightweight history (four) before moving up to welterweight. Riding a 15-fight winning streak, Makhachev will arguably face his toughest challenge against Maddalena (18-2), who is unbeaten in 18 straight bouts.
