Joe Pyfer is a late withdrawal from UFC Mexico.
The UFC announced Saturday that Pyfer has been forced out of his main card bout with Kelvin Gastelum due to illness. Consequently, a flyweight bout between Edgar Chairez and CJ Vergara has been elevated from the preliminary portion of the lineup according to UFC.com.
Pyfer and Gastelum were both competing for the first time in 2025 after rebounding from losses in their most recent bouts this past June. At UFC 303, Pyfer scored a first-round knockout of Marc-Andre Barriault, while won a decision over Daniel Rodriguez at a Fight Night in Saudi Arabia.
It is not yet known if the bout will be re-booked for a later event or if Pyfer and Gastelum will be given different assignments.
Pyfer later released a statement via Instagram Stories confirming the news.
“Just want to say my heart is broken I couldn’t fight today,” Pyfer wrote. “I got super sick and hopefully we can reschedule this fight for a few weeks from now. Unfortunately comes with the territory of traveling outside the states. Never again. My apologies guys. We’ll be back.”
UFC Mexico is headlined by a flyweight contenders’ bout between two-time champion Brandon Moreno and recent title challenger Steve Erceg. The event proceeds with 12 bouts.
