Jon Jones waffles on recent retirement statement: ‘I’m just taking it day by day’

Perhaps attending UFC 327 in person made Jon Jones reconsider his recent statement that he was done with fighting.

“I’m not sure if I’m retired or not,” Jones said in an interview with UFC Brasil. “I’m just taking it day by day just trying to kind of figure out my body and how I feel, things like that. I’ll tell you what, being here at the UFC right now definitely has given me this fire that I haven’t felt in a little bit, so it feels very good to be here.”

“Bones” hasn’t competed since November 2024, when he defended the heavyweight crown with a third-round stoppage of Stipe Miocic at UFC 309. While UFC CEO Dana White expressed confidence that a Jones-Tom Aspinall championship matchup would be booked, that pairing never came to fruition. Jones briefly retired last June only to re-enter the drug testing pool when plans for the UFC White House card were announced.

Perspectives on how close Jones was to reaching an agreement to compete at the June 14 event differ, but the former UFC two-division was ultimately left out in the cold when the card was announced. While White claimed that Jones was never seriously considered for the UFC White House card, “Bones” has said that the promotion didn’t meet his financial demands. Jones was diplomatic when addressing that dispute in his latest interview, though he reiterated that the money offered wasn’t to his liking.

In Praise of ‘Poatan’

Had Jones and the UFC come to terms, it’s possible that he would have face Alex Pereira at the event. Instead, “Poatan” will lock horns with Ciryl Gane for interim heavyweight gold in the UFC White House co-main event.

“You know, I feel like I wanted to be compensated in a way that I wasn’t, and we just had a disagreement and that happens in life,” Jones said. “But you know what, I’m a big fan of Alex Pereira. I love the way he carries himself, he’s just such a classy fighter, potential opponent, person, big fan of him.”
