Nurmagomedov’s friend Islam Makhachev dethroned Jack Della Maddalena to win the welterweight title at UFC 322 last weekend. Adam Zubayraev documented Makhachev’s camp leading up to UFC 322. Footage has now surfaced of an interaction where Nurmagomedov questions his cousin Umar’s choice in books.

Nurmagomedov didn’t like Umar reading a book about the Sicilian mafia. “The Eagle” said: “Now back to your pointless books. You live in Dagestan, why do you need Sicilian books? If you want to become mafioso, sure. But you’re not aiming for that.”
However, Makhachev was quick to defend Umar, arguing that reading helps nurture one’s personality as a whole.
“By reading books you develop your Russian, your vocabulary, your worldview. You improve your understanding of everything else,” Makhachev said.
Meanwhile, fellow teammate Abubakar Nurmagomedov couldn’t help but crack a joke.
“These people lived their whole lives in the mountains, herding sheep and cows, now they’ve come to New York discussing Sicily,” he said.
Avoiding Negative Information
Nurmagomedov, on a serious note, went on to explain why he questioned Umar. The former UFC lightweight champion notes that Umar, being an elite UFC fighter, doesn’t have ample free time on his hands. Nurmagomedov believes Umar should set his priorities with the limited time in his hands, and a Sicilian mafia book certainly doesn’t make it to the list. The UFC Hall of Famer says that he barely consumes any negative content to avoid cluttering his head. Nurmagomedov expects Umar and others to become more composed and avoid unnecessary content as they grow up.
“What you receive has a huge impact not only on you but also on those around you,” Khabib said. “So take what you need. What you don’t need, leave it. Yes, I understand when you have lots of free time and you can take in different kinds of information. But when you train morning and evening, you need to rest during the day, sleep and rest at night so you can wake up again. You have family, friends, kids, neighbours, business – so much. And at that moment you want to throw in some Sicilian book that takes hours to read.
“I, for example, am not subscribed to any channels at all. I almost never get any negative information… Maybe they’re a bit younger, maybe that’s why. In a couple of years they’ll settle down, come back to normal.”
