While Chimaev and Nurmagomedov have never been the best of friends, they have never had any feud, barring a stray incident involving Abubakar Nurmagomedov. Responding to a fan during an Instagram live, Chimaev once said that he would “smash” Khabib. Chimaev’s words didn’t sit well with Khabib’s teammate, Abubakar, who confronted the Chechen-born standout at UFC 280. However, the beef was quickly quashed with the intervention of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.

United When Necessary
Chimaev recently hinted at an alliance with Khabib in matters of mutual interest. While Khabib is nicknamed “The Eagle,” Chimaev’s nickname “Borz” translates to wolf. Chimaev says that while the wolf and the eagle might not be best friends, they will join forces to protect the mountains when needed.
“The wolf and the eagle are not always close, but when you need to protect the mountains, they will always protect them together!” Chimaev wrote on social media.
Chimaev (15-0) won the middleweight title with a dominant unanimous decision against Dricus Du Plessis this past August. Meanwhile, Khabib’s teammate, Islam Makhachev, clinched his second UFC belt with a dominant win over former welterweight champ Jack Della Maddalena. Fans and pundits are now mulling over a potential middleweight matchup between Makhachev (28-1) and Chimaev.
