Leon Edwards Discusses Rivalry with Ian Garry

Leon Edwards isn’t obsessed with his beef with Ian Garry

Edwards faces Carlos Prates at UFC 322 on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. Meanwhile, Garry will take on former champ Belal Muhammad in the co-main event at UFC Qatar on Nov. 22 at the ABHA Arena in Doha.

Edwards would like to fight Garry next if they both win their respective outings.

“If he loses then no, if he wins, then yeah. He’s one of the annoying welterweights in the division. So it would be good to go out there and smoke him in my hometown,” Edwards said on “The Ariel Helwani Show.”

Garry trained for a while with Edwards at Team Renegade in Birmingham. However, Garry was eventually banned from the gym over allegations of recording sparring sessions without consent. Garry moved to Chute Box in Brazil after rumors surfaced that the Irishman had been banned from other gyms in the U.K. as well. There has since been some animosity from Garry, which Edwards can’t make sense of. “Rocky” believes he probably made Garry work too hard at Renegade MMA.

“Must have given him too much work. I don’t get it,” Edwards said.

My Plan is to Get the Belt Back

However, the rivalry with Garry isn’t something that Edwards is hell bent on settling. Edwards isn’t keen on fighting Garry if “The Future” loses his next fight. Edwards’ ultimate goal is to climb back to title contention. According to Edwards, Garry’s biggest achievement so far is going the distance in a decision loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov. Edwards doesn’t think fighting Garry helps his case if the latter loses his next fight.

“No… My plan is to get the belt back,” Edwards said. “Ian’s biggest achievement in the sport right now is losing to Shavkat and that’s facts… For me and my plans, if it comes it comes, if it doesn’t it doesn’t.”

Edwards (22-5) lost his title to Muhammad (24-4) last year and followed it up with a submission loss to Sean Brady earlier this year. Meanwhile, Garry (16-1) rebounded from his lone career loss against Rakhmonov with a win over Prates (22-7).
