On Thursday, Eurosport NL broke the news that the UFC 321 bout between Abdul-Kareem Al-Selwady (15-4) and Matheus Camilo (9-3) was off. Al-Selwady confirmed the news on Facebook, while not going into detail why he was not cleared for competition. Additionally, Camilo’s coach, Eric Nicksick, posted about the cancelation while adding that Camilo will likely compete in November.
The two were to set to square off in the Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Oct. 25. Both athletes dropping their organizational debuts by stoppage, with their five- and six-fight win streaks crumbling for Al-Selwady and Camilo, respectively. Per Nicksick, the athlete currently based in Louisiana may have encountered difficulty reaching the 156-pound cap, but the coach noted that his information may not have been entirely accurate.
Stumbling Blocks Met on Both Sides
As mentioned before, both Al-Selwady and Camilo fell short in their UFC debuts. The former was signed off the 2023 season of Dana White’s Contender Series, where he outworked George Hardwick to pick up his contract. He did not appear until the following year, getting punched out by Loik Radzhabov in what was his first career defeat to come after the first round. Before facing Hardwick, Al-Selwady reached the Contender Series by securing the Fury FC lightweight strap. Selwady was looking to make a comeback after over 19 months on the shelf, with cancelations on both sides for his previous three scheduled matches before this one.
Like his prospective opponent—it is not clear if Camilo will be rebooked against a different foe in November or if he will still face Al-Selwady—Camilo spent time on the Fury FC circuit. Six wins in a row including three under the Fury banner were enough for the Nova Uniao-slash-Xtreme Couture product to get picked up by the organization. His debut came in May, where Gabriel Green ended up face cranking him in the second stanza.
