Mark Vologdin Recalls Support From Khamzat Chimaev Early in Career

Khamzat Chimaev is a benevolent soul, even though he doesn’t make much noise about it.

Mark Vologdin (12-4) made a Dana White’s Contender Series appearance against Juan Adrian Luna Martinetti last week. While Vologdin dropped a unanimous decision, the bloodbath has been labeled the greatest fight in DWCS history. Both fighters were awarded Ultimate Fighting Championship contracts and $25,000 bonuses, a first for the UFC-produced spinoff.

Vologdin subsequently revealed that he received a lot of support from Chimaev (17-0) when he first arrived at the AllStars Training Center in Stockholm, the UFC middleweight champ’s former headquarters. Chimaev approached Vologdin and struck up a conversation. “Borz” then arranged for a meal every day at a nearby cafe for every fighter who used to live in the gym. Chimaev also drove Vologdin to a store and bought him all the equipment necessary. As Chimaev was picking expensive things up at random, Vologdin tried to stop him, but to no avail.

“When I was in AllStars, he invited me, ‘Hey, come to me.’ I come to him and he asked me where I’m from, where I live, what I’m doing here, how I came… After training we go to the cafe very close to out gym and he fixed food for people who lived at the gym,” Vologdin told MMA Junkie. “We can eat after training one time in the day… I was so thankful for this. After that he drive me to one shop and bought equipment for me… He didn’t even see what he take for me, he just take this, take this, take this… I said, ‘What are you doing? It’s expensive, stop.’ But he didn’t care.”
