More Than Meets the Eye: Waldo Cortes-Acosta Explains Callout of Tom Aspinall

Waldo Cortes-Acosta is calling out Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight king Tom Aspinall.

Cortes-Acosta faced Aspinall’s teammate Ante Delija in the co-main event at UFC Vegas 110 on Saturday at The Apex in Las Vegas. The bout was initially stopped after a volley of punches from Delija went unanswered by Cortes-Acosta. However, the replay revealed that Cortes-Acosta was poked in the eye by the Croatian. The contest resumed, and “Salsa Boy” knocked out Delija (26-7) to earn a performance of the night bonus.

Cortes-Acosta revealed that his vision was only worsening but it was adrenaline that helped him push through.

“I never feel like I’ll stop the fight for a poke in the eye,” Cortes-Acosta said at the post-fight press conference. “I felt angry after that… The eye was getting worse and worse. The emotions, the hunger; it pushed me on to still continue fighting.”

Cortes-Acosta (15-2) called out the heavyweight champion, Aspinall, after beating his teammate. Explaining his callout, the Dominican says it’s firstly because Aspinall has the title. However, Cortes-Acosta is also taunting Aspinall, who did not continue after getting poked in the eye by Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 last month, leading to a no-contest. And finally, Cortes-Acosta believes he deserves a shot after beating Delija, who Aspinall speaks of highly.

“It because of him being a champion and he quit because of a poke in the eye, too. And the third thing, his training partner Delija, I knock him out in the first round. What would happen if me and Tom Aspinall fight?”
