Kazushi Sakuraba’s grappling organization will hold an intriguing event on Dec. 12.
Quintet Ultra will feature teams representing the UFC, Pride Fighting Championships, Strikeforce and the WEC in a five-on-five grappling event held at the Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas.
Thus far two representatives have been confirmed for each squad: Anthony Johnson and Sean O’Malley for the UFC; Sakuraba and Takanori Gomi for Pride; Gilbert Melendez and Jake Shields for Strikeforce and Chad Mendes and Glover Teixeira for the WEC. Full rosters are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Quintet Ultra utilizes a single-elimination format, where competitors are eliminated by a loss or draw, with the winner of each match remaining on the mat. A team loses when all five of its members are eliminated.
The event will also have singles matches, including a “super fight” between Gordon Ryan and Alexey Oleynik. According to a release, the event is a collaboration between UFC Fight Pass and Sakuraba, the founder of the Quintet promotion.
“We’ve always been very grateful for UFC’s support from when we first approached them with the idea of Quintet,” Sakuraba said. “I am personally looking forward to the amazing things we will accomplish together as Quintet continues to gain momentum around the world by being showcased to the hardcore fight fans on UFC Fight Pass.”
Quintet Ultra will air exclusively on UFC Fight Pass on Dec. 12 at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
