Sean Strickland isn’t happy with the increasing number of foreigners on the Ultimate Fighting Championship roster.
Strickland recently went off on the composition of the UFC’s roster. According to the former middleweight champ, the UFC’s unwillingness to spend is the reason behind the dwindling number of Americans. Strickland explained that the UFC’s fight purse at the entry level doesn’t suffice for Americans due to the high cost of living. However, Strickland claims foreigners are happy to fight for the same amount. While Strickland admits that top UFC stars are well paid, he claims Walmart workers earn more than an entry-level UFC fighter.
“The problem with the UFC dude is that they don’t pay anybody, they don’t pay guys s-t,” Strickland recently told Adin Ross. “So the reason why you’re seeing everybody in the roster’s like f—ng Akmed and Jose and whatever Brazilian name, that’s because the UFC doesn’t pay guys money… So you’re gonna have an entire roster full of just foreigners… It’s fun to go watch two f—-ing Dagestani cavemen fight but at some point, they’re not American. They don’t have American beliefs, they don’t have American ideals. At some point when the whole f—-ing roster doesn’t speak English because the UFC so f—-ing cheap… They pay the Top 5 pretty good. But [for newcomers], you make more money f—-ing working at Walmart.”
Known for expressing his unabashed opinions, Strickland has often been criticized for his xenophobic, transphobic and misogynistic comments. Strickland won the title with a shocking upset win over Israel Adesanya in 2023 but lost it in his first defense against Dricus Du Plessis via a controversial spilt decision. After rebounding with a win over Paulo Costa, Strickland adamantly called for a title rematch. He suffered a lopsided decision loss against Du Plessis in their rematch this past February.
