Steve Erceg has a new opponent at UFC on ESPN 72

Erceg was scheduled to fight Alex Perez in the co-main event at UFC on ESPN 72 on Aug. 9 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. However, Hyun Sung Park will replace Perez on short notice after the veteran was forced out of the out due to injury. Perez confirmed his withdrawal on social media, and Park announced that he would be filling in via Instagram.

“Sucks to say that I have to pull out of my fight due to a fracture,” Perez wrote. “It is going to take some time to heal. I was looking forward to fighting on August 9, but everything happens for a reason. Hopefully, [Steve Erceg] gets a new opponent. I’ll be back soon, better than ever. Thank you to everyone who has supported me through this crazy journey.”

Perez has dropped four of his last five. The veteran was returning after over a year since suffering a knee injury loss against Tatsuro Taira in June 2024.

Erceg earned a title shot against Alexandre Pantoja just three fights into his UFC career. “Astro Boy” dropped a hard-fought unanimous decision to Pantoja at UFC 301. However, the Australian has since dropped two more fights against Kai Kara-France and Brandon Moreno

Meanwhile, Park won the “Road to UFC” Season 1 in the flyweight bracket in 2023 by beating Seung Guk Choi in the finals. The undefeated South Korean has since racked up consecutive stoppage wins over Shannon Ross and Carlos Hernandez.
