Tom Aspinall recently shared his honest opinion on the BMF title.
Max Holloway (26-8) will put his BMF belt on the line in a trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier (30-9) in the main event at UFC 318 on Saturday at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. This will also be Poirier’s retirement fight in front of his home crowd, while Holloway looks to avenge two previous losses.
Aspinall doesn’t seem to have a high opinion of the BMF title since it’s not a world championship. “Honey Badger” believes Holloway and Poirier are big enough draws by themselves to headline a UFC pay-per-view. Considering their legendary careers and legacies, Aspinall doesn’t think Holloway and Poirier need a BMF title on the line at UFC 318.
Aspinall: Holloway and Poirier Are Already Legends of the Sport
“Do you want my honest opinion? I mean it’s a title, ain’t it? But it’s not a world championship,” Aspinall told TNT Sports. “So what are we doing? These guys don’t need a title. They are two legends of the sport. Look at the name value, even look at the rankings, look at how many fights they’ve got, look at the shorts they’re wearing. We don’t really need a title on the line to be honest.”
There is seemingly no clear reason behind the creation of the BMF title, nor any clear criteria to contend for it. Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz competed for the first BMF title in 2019, where “Gamebred” beat Diaz via TKO. The title was most recently at stake at UFC 300 last year, when Holloway square off against Justin Gaethje. “Blessed” beat Gaethje down before knocking him out in an iconic buzzer-beater.
