Tom Aspinall’s Plan: ‘Get Rid of Ciryl Gane from the Title Picture for Good’

Tom
Aspinall
has been trying to track Ciryl Gane
down for quite some time.

Now that he’s the undisupted heavyweight champion, Gane will be
coming to him in the UFC 321
main event on Oct. 25 in Abu Dhabi. Aspinall recently reacted to
the news on social media after the promotion announced the booking
on Tuesday.

“Finally we’re back after over a year hiatus,” Aspinall said in a
video on Instagram. “Me and Ciryl Gane finally signed on the dotted
line. This is the fourth time we’ve been matched up together. He
turned me down [for a] fight early on, before we were in the
rankings.

“After that, he fought [Serghei] Spivac. I said in a post-fight
interview after I beat [Marcin] Tybura [that I was going to fight
the winner of Gane vs. Spivac]. I went to Paris. Ciryl,
unfortunately, turned down the fight on a second occasion.”

When Gane stands across from Aspinall in the UFC 321 headliner, it
will mark the Frenchman’s third undisputed heavyweight title shot
within the Las Vegas-based promotion. After capturing the interim
crown with a TKO of Derrick
Lewis
at UFC 265, “Bon Gamin” dropped a five-round verdict
against Francis
Ngannou
in his first championship opportunity at UFC 270 in
January 2022. He also came up short against Jon Jones in a
clash for the vacant strap at UFC 285, falling via first-round
submission in March 2023. Back-to-back victories over Spivac and
Alexander
Volkov
have propelled Ganes back to the top of the queue in the
wake of Jones’ retirement.

Aspinall Was Supposed to Defend Interim Belt vs. Gane

Aspinall revealed that his interim title defense against Curtis
Blaydes
at UFC 304 was also supposed to be Gane, who turned it
down due to other obligations.

“Unfortunately, Ciryl was busy that date [and] was filming his
Netflix series. … And now we are matched up for the 25th of
October, Abu Dhabi. Me and Ciryl, the fourth attempt is here, and
this is Ciryl’s third title shot.

“We are going to try and get rid of Ciryl Gane from the title
picture for good.”
