Tyron Woodley surprised fans this week by floating the idea of reaching out to Nick and Nate Diaz to train with them as he works his way back to the UFC welterweight title he lost to Kamaru Usman back in March.
“The Chosen One,” a longtime pupil of Din Thomas at American Top Team, has already shaken up training regimen, teaming up recently with head coach Firas Zahabi at Tristar Gym in Montreal. There, Woodley has had the opportunity to train alongside the greatest welterweight of all-time, Georges St. Pierre, in an effort to sharpen his skillset.
The 37-year-old spoke to fans recently online and let it be known that in his quest to get back to being the champion he’s leaving no stone unturned and is considering reaching out to the Diaz brothers.
“You know what? At one point in time I really wanted to fight Nate, not because I thought he was weak, not because I thought it was an easy fight or I wanted his clout,” Woodley said (transcript by BJPenn.com). “I thought he was a beast, I thought Nate was a beast, I thought GSP was a beast, Bisping was a beast, Carlos Condit.
“That’s why I wanted to fight those guys. Now I’m in a position where it does not make sense for me probably to fight them.
“I’m thinking about reaching out and training [with them],” he continued. “What ya’ll think about that? I’m training with GSP here soon. I already started training with Firas [Zahabi] a couple of sessions. What do y’all think about me training with Nate or Nick?”
Woodley was expected take on Robbie Lawler in a rematch back at UFC Minneapolis in June but was forced out of the bout due to injury.
