On Thursday, BJPenn.com broke the news at Bobby Green (32-17-1, 1 NC) vs. Diego Ferreira (19-6) would no longer be taking place at UFC 319 on Saturday. The aging lightweights were expected to duel inside of the United Center in Chicago, and the UFC has since confirmed that a Green injury forced the match to be postponed.
Green was looking to put a two-fight first-round stoppage loss skid in the rearview mirror on Saturday. Before getting finished by Mauricio Ruffy in March and Paddy Pimblett in July 2024, “King” had put himself on a fairly decent run with three wins and a loss. While he came up short to Jalin Turner, he was able to throttle Tony Ferguson, punch out Grant Dawson and outwork Jim Miller in a bloody back-and-forth battle.
At the age of 40, Ferreira has won two of three dating back to 2022. The Brazilian busted up Michael Johnson in 2023 and earned a late stoppage of Mateusz Rebecki in 2024 to put himself back on the radar. A decision loss to Dawson thwarted some of his momentum. Before that successful stretch, the Fortis MMA product had a dreadful 2021 campaign with a split decision defeat and a pair of second-round knockout losses.
TUF Finals Match Pushed to September
In addition to Green-Ferreira getting bumped, the welterweight final of Season 33 of “The Ultimate Fighter” has also fallen off the UFC 319 slate. For undisclosed reasons first brought to light by social media users ThinkerBoxing, Daniil Donchenko (11-2) vs. Rodrigo Sezinando (8-1) will not be taking place this weekend either. Promotion officials have since stated it will be set for Noche UFC, also known as UFC Fight Night 259, in San Antonio on Sept. 13.
Cormier’s first pick at welterweight, Sezinando, grappled his way to the finals. The Brazilian who is 8-1 as a pro with seven wins inside the distance did not struggle a great deal as he exceeded expectations as an eventual finalist. To get to his match with Donchenko, he wrangled Jefferson Creighton, a teammate, with constant takedowns and back takes. Creighton fared well in the final round, but it was too little, too late.
For his fourth pick, coach Cormier selected Donchenko in what he did not know would become an all-team Cormier final. To lay claim for a place in the six-figure matchup that was to be live on UFC 319, Donchenko blew through Matt Dixon in the first round. The Ukrainian went a bit too far during his finishing sequence, planting shots to the back of the head when trying to pound Dixon out after hurt him with a salvo of slashing elbows and powerful fists—although he ultimate got the stoppage he was seeking.
