Treading into familiar territory, Jack Della Maddalena has opened as an underdog for his first title defense.
Maddalena will look to defend his welterweight title for the first time against Islam Makhachev in the main event at UFC 322 on Nov. 15 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The champ has opened as a sizeable +205 underdog against the challenger, a -265 favorite.
Aussie Champ Accustomed to Underdog Role
However, Maddalena is no stranger to upsetting the odds. The Australian was a heavy underdog going into his title win over Belal Muhammad at UFC 315 this past May. While Maddalena had also opened as an underdog in his previous two outings against Gilbert Burns and Kevin Holland, the odds later tilted in his favor. Meanwhile, Makhachev has never seen underdog status and has never been less than a -250 underdog since 2018.
While Maddalena is riding an 18-fight winning streak, Makhachev is on a 15-fight winning streak of his own. Maddalena has finished four of his eight UFC wins, proving himself against the likes of Burns and Muhammad. Meanwhile, Makhachev has finished 10 of his 15 UFC wins, stopping the likes of Dustin Poirier, Alexander Volkanovski and Charles Oliveira.
