UFC 322 Update: Former Welterweight Champ to Face Fighting Nerds Staple

The Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight title picture could use a little clarification, and it is getting it in November.

The organization announced on Thursday that Leon Edwards (22-5-1) will be taking on Carlos Prates (22-7) at UFC 322. The latter called for this match after a recent victory, and the promotion has answered his call for this welterweight entanglement likely on the main card of this Madison Square Garden-based show on Nov. 13.

This will be the first attempt for “Rocky” to break out of a career-first losing streak. After surrendering his belt to Belal Muhammad in 2024, he battled Sean Brady in March and suffered his first stoppage defeat. Before that loss, the Brit amassed a mighty unbeaten streak of 13 in a row, including victories over names like Vicente Luque, Rafael dos Anjos, Kamaru Usman twice and Colby Covington.

Revenge of the Nerds

Bouncing back from his first loss in years by sparking Geoff Neal with a magnificent buzzer-beating spinning back elbow at UFC 319, Prates reminded welterweight faithful that he was a threat to be watched. When the Brazilian reached the promotion in 2024, he blasted through the opposition with four knockouts to elevate him into a match with Ian Garry in April. While he lost, the Fighting Nerds staple got back on the winning track and took home an extra $50K for his “Knockout of the Year” contender.

Prates is a member of a burgeoning Sao Paulo-originated camp whose major membership also includes Caio Borralho, Jean Silva, Mauricio Ruffy, Thiago Moises, Michal Oleksiejczuk, Bruna Brasil and himself. Together, the team has fared exceedingly well in the Octagon, even putting together a lengthy win streak that only ended when Prates suffered his decision loss to Garry.
