In recent months, Amanda Nunes has made a legitimate claim toward being regarded as the greatest female mixed martial artist of all-time. Now, she’s being recognized in a different way.
The UFC two-division champion will be featured on the cover of the ESPN The Magazine “Body Issue,” which hits newsstands on Sept. 6. It will mark the final time that the magazine is released in printed form. A digital version of the “Body Issue” can be viewed here.
The “Body Issue” was created by ESPN to “celebrate the athletic form.” The issue features “athletes of all shapes and sizes, representing numerous sports.” Nunes joins the likes of Cleveland Browns defensive lineman Myles Garrett, Oklahoma City point guard Chris Paul, surfer Lakey Peterson and Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich among those who are represented in the gallery.
“Doing the Body Issue was something different I wanted to try. Everything in my life is always like that — maybe if I try it one time, I’ll like it. And right now is the best time for me to do it. My dream is coming true, and all these good things are happening in my life. Why not do something different? Be naked, take a picture,” Nunes told ESPN earlier this year.
“The fans can see the technique altogether, how the body looks under all of the fighter’s clothing. It’s a good thing to see.”
The first openly gay champion in UFC history, Nunes is coming off a first-round stoppage of Holly Holm in a bantamweight title defense this past July. The 31-year-old Brazilian has won nine consecutive bouts and will next defend the 135-pound belt against Germaine de Randamie at UFC 245 on Dec. 14.
