Lerryan Douglas lived up to his “Gunslinger” moniker.
The Legacy Fighting Alliance titleholder was one of five competitors signed to an Ultimate Fighting Championship contract on Week 5 of Dana White’s Contender Series, as he punched out Cam Teague in the first round of their featherweight showcase on Tuesday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Douglas (13-5, 1-0 DWCS) drew the curtain a mere 36 seconds into Round 1, authoring the fastest finish of his 18-fight career.
Teague (9-2, 0-2 DWCS) walked into a buzzsaw. Douglas tested the waters with a few leg kicks, then floored the Alabama native with a brutal left hook-right cross combo. Teague scrambled to his feet, at which point he was met with a devastating left hook that separated from him senses.
Douglas has won five fights in a row, all of them finishes.
Heavyweight Steven Asplund and lightweight Samuel Sanches are set to join Douglas on the UFC roster in the not-too-distant future, along with women’s strawweights Carol Foro and Shanelle Dyer.
Asplund took care of Cage Fury Fighting Championships titleholder Anthony Guarascio with a concussive left uppercut and follow-up elbows in the first round of their heavyweight attraction. Guarascio (4-1, 0-1 DWCS) met his end 16 seconds into Round 1.
Asplund (6-1, 1-0 DWCS)—who once weighed more than 500 pounds—lured his counterpart into a brawl and made him pay for the indiscretion. He decked Guarascio during an exchange, pounced on the fallen Floridian and buried him with an avalanche of elbows to force the stoppage.
The 27-year-old Asplund has posted three straight wins.
Meanwhile, Sanches put away Chasen Blair with a volley of violent punches in the first round of their lightweight tilt. On an eight-fight winning streak, the promising 22-year-old Sanches (11-1, 1-0 DWCS) brought it to a close 2:01 into Round 1.
Blair (7-4, 0-2 DWCS) closed the distance, secured a takedown and jumped to the back inside the first 30 seconds. Sanches stood, stayed calm, shook off the American and moved into the clinch behind a series of knees. The Brazilian then unleashed his hands, first to the body and then to the head. Hooks from both hands left Blair slumping and unconscious at the base of the fence.
It was the seventh first-round finish of Sanches’ career.
Further down the card, Foro leaned into power punching combinations and bulletproof takedown defense, as she laid claim to a unanimous decision over the previously unbeaten Dyer in a three-round women’s strawweight affair. All three cageside judges turned in scorecards for Foro (9-1, 1-0 DWCS): 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.
Dyer (6-1, 0-1 DWCS) lacked the firepower necessary to deal with the heavy-handed Brazilian. Foro floored the Great Britian Top Team prospect three times with clubbing right hooks, opened a cut above her left eye and put visible damage on the other side of her face with thudding lefts. Dyer survived and managed to gain a measure of respect with kicks to the legs and body, clean one-twos and a probing jab. Even so, it was not enough to counteract the sustained punishment she endured.
Foro, 28, has rattled off seven consecutive victories.
Finally, Serra-Longo Fight Team rep Freddy Vidal overcame a failed weight cut to dismiss Felipe Franco with a rear-naked choke in the third round of their light heavyweight confrontation. Vidal (4-0, 1-0 DWCS), who missed weight by four pounds, drew the curtain 4:48 into Round 3.
It was a slog until the finish. Vidal conceded a high-amplitude takedown in the first round but sprang a reversal, advanced to a mounted crucifix and piled up points with elbows, forearm strikes and hammerfists. He looked like a spent force in the middle stanza and chose to hang out in the clinch for much of the third, where he appeared to allow Franco (8-1, 0-1 DWCS) to inch ahead. Vidal found himself pinned to the mat with a little more than a minute to go, swept into top position, applied some elbow-laced ground-and-pound and progressed toward the back. From there, he snuck his arms into position for the choke, and an exhausted Franco did not have the fuel he needed to withstand his squeeze.
Vidal, 31, has stopped his last three opponents. While he was not awarded a contract, he was promised a spot on the season finale of DWCS in October.
