UFC interested in booking Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz 2, but not yet a done deal

The UFC is interested in running back the first and only “BMF” championship bout in promotion history.

A rematch between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz is currently being discussed, but no formal offer has been made to the fighters, and contracts haven’t been issued or signed at this time. News of the rematch was first reported by TMZ.

According to sources that spoke to MMA Fighting on Tuesday, preliminary discussions have started for the fight with interest from the UFC on booking Masvidal vs. Diaz 2. It’s far too early at this stage to say the fight is expected to happen, but it’s definitely a matchup the promotion is interested in revisiting.

The first fight between Masvidal and Diaz headlined UFC 244 in New York with the first ever “baddest motherf**ker” title being placed around the winner’s waist by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Masvidal dominated the majority of the contest with a slick striking attack, but the fight ultimately came to an end after Diaz suffered a cut that forced the doctor to stop the contest after the end of the third round. Afterward, both Masvidal and Diaz expressed interest in meeting again in a rematch, but the fight never came together.

Diaz hasn’t fought since then, and Masvidal made his return in July when he lost a unanimous decision to Kamaru Usman in a short-notice welterweight title bout at UFC 251.

There’s no exact timeframe for the fight, although it’s possible Masvidal vs. Diaz 2 could take place in late 2020, or possibly early 2021. But it’s too soon to know for sure whether or not the bout will be made official.
