UFC on ESPN 11 medical suspensions: Josh Emmett, four others facing potential six-month layoff

Following a “Fight of the Night” performance at UFC on ESPN 11, Josh Emmett will be headed for surgery to repair a severely damaged knee while also facing a mandatory medical suspension handed down from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Emmett suffered a complete ACL tear, an MCL sprain with partial tearing, Bakers cyst rupture, focal impact fractur of the femur on the lateral and chondral defect on the tibia laterally matching the impact area after taking a misstep in the opening seconds of his fight against Shane Burgos.

Somehow, Emmett still managed to pull off a unanimous decision win despite essentially fighting on one leg but now he’ll be forced to go under the knife to repair all the damage done.

The Nevada Commission ordered Emmett to undergo an MRI of his left knee, which was done on Monday, and now he’ll need clearance from an orthopedic or sports medicine doctor or he’ll be suspended until Dec. 18. Given the wide range of injuries suffered, Emmett will likely be out until sometime in 2021 regardless of the medical suspension.

Elsewhere on the card, Roosevelt Roberts has to undergo an MRI and x-ray of his left elbow after he suffered an armbar submission loss to Jim Miller. If the results come back positive, Roberts will need clearance from an orthopedic or sports medicine doctor or he’ll face a similar suspension until Dec. 18.

Tecia Torres is also facing a potential six-month layoff until December after the commission ordered her to undergo an x-ray on her left hand. If that comes back positive, she also has to get clearance from an orthopedic or sports medicine doctor to return before Dec. 18.

The same can be said for her opponent Brianna Van Buren, who has to have her right hand X-rayed following the fight. If her results come back positive, Van Buren has to gain clearance from an orthopedic or sports medicine doctor to return before Dec. 18.
