UFC on ESPN 9 averages just over 1 million viewers with SpaceX launch earning biggest ratings

UFC on ESPN 9 ended up with a spot in the top-20 for overall cable ratings on Saturday, but the event faced stiff competition from coverage of the SpaceX launch as well as the George Floyd-inspired protests taking place across the country.

According to the Nielsen Ratings System, UFC on ESPN 9 averaged 1.021 million viewers over the three-hour broadcast with Gilbert Burns defeating former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in the five round main event.

The card managed a .42 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic as well.

It must be noted that UFC on ESPN 9 was also simulcast on ESPN+ and because that’s a subscriber-based service, the ratings are not released.

Overall, UFC on ESPN 9 landed at No. 5 on the list of dedicated UFC cards on ESPN. The top-rated show of all time remains the first UFC on ESPN card with 1.463 million viewers on average for the card headlined by Francis Ngannou and former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

The UFC card actually produced solid ratings for a Saturday night card, but news coverage for the SpaceX launch ended up at No. 1 and No. 2 overall with 4.633 million average viewers watching the launch itself with another 3.754 million viewers on board for the after show.

The majority of the top-20 cable broadcasts was dominated by coverage of the protests happening all over the United States with CNN and FOX News receiving the highest ratings.

The UFC on ESPN 9 preliminary card that started at 6 p.m. ET landed at No. 44 overall for the day with 615,000 viewers on average.
