UFC Rio Official for Oct. 11; Middleweight Star Uninterested in Appearing

While the UFC is taking to Brazil for the first time in over a year, there is one prominent Brazilian who does not want in.

With four matches already booked for the event, the UFC announced on Wednesday that it would be returning to Rio de Janeiro on Oct. 11. The currently unnamed UFC Fight Night event will be the first Brazil card since UFC 301, and it will be the 13th UFC show held in the capital city of the South American MMA hub. The Farmasi Arena will play host to this fight card, one that does not currently have a headliner.

Due to the nature of the event—it is a Fight Night, and not a pay-per-view—fans do not expect any titles will be on the line. It is not likely that the sole Brazilian champ of Alexandre Pantoja will defend his throne on home soil. Additionally, the most noteworthy local stars of Alex Pereira, Amanda Nunes, Charles Oliveira, Virna Jandiroba and Natalia Silva are not likely candidates for appearing. Other talents including Mauricio Ruffy, Jailton Almeida, Caio Borralho, Jean Silva and Carlos Prates are already booked elsewhere. That leaves a few options: Paulo Costa and Renato “Money” Moicano.

“The Eraser” Shares Surprising Thoughts About Brazilian Fans

Costa, who beat Roman Kopylov via decision at UFC 318 in July, promptly ruled out his next fight taking place in his home country. The savvy social media practitioner spoke out earlier in the week, suggesting that he was not thrilled with the Brazilian fan contingent.

“I don’t want that support from [Brazilian fans], no,” Costa told Ag. Fight. “Honestly. You can keep it up. The more hate, the better. Hate drives social media and engagement, wherever it may be, much more than love. Honestly, I don’t need the Brazilian audience. I don’t think anyone from the UFC does. What are you going to do there? Sell products, tickets, pay-per-views? I don’t think it makes sense.”

Unlike “Borrachinha,” Moicano has already campaigned the UFC for a chance to fight in Brazil.

“Hey UFC, Jailton Almeida is not fighting in Brazil! If you guys put me on that card, I will have a good speech after the fight to our politicians,” Moicano wrote on social media.
