Atop UFC Rio, Charles Oliveira prevailed with a second-round face crank of Mateusz Gamrot. The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s all-time leader in post-fight bonus awards scored one more at night’s end, a “Performance of the Night” check for $50,000. While some fighters use bonuses to pay expenses, put a down payment on a house, take care of family or any number of other reasons, Oliveira has something special in mind.
On Oct. 13, Children’s Day will be observed in Brazil by the former champion—although it technically takes place every year on the 12th—to focus on celebrating “rights, health, care and leisure of the little ones.” With his one-year-old son in tow, Oliveira held his boy in the air like the famous scene from “The Lion King” after the match concluded, and his son is inspiring him to hold a huge party in his hometown.
Let’s Have a Gigantic Party
Speaking to commentator Michael Bisping during his triumphant post-fight interview, Oliveira felt ahead of time that his performance would merit some extra cash. As it turned out, he was one of four recipients of POTN checks along with Vitor Petrino, Beatriz Mesquita and Julia Polastri.
“I don’t know if I can say this,” Oliveira said in Portuguese. “But I think I won another $50 thousand dollars. Let’s have a gigantic party in the favela. On Monday, we’re putting on a gigantic party at the favela. It’s Children’s Day. That’s it, damn it! This kid went from the favela to the world! It’s Brazil, damn it!”
The massive party is scheduled for Monday in his home city of Guaruja, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The former champion grew up in one of the favelas, or slums, in the area, and wants to give back to the community. More importantly, he wants to inspire youths to live life to the fullest and chase their dreams like he did.
