The Ultimate Fighting Championship‘s return to Brazil is now set after the official UFC Rio weigh-ins took place.
Headlining the 12-fight card is a fight between former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira and late-replacement Mateusz Gamrot. Both contenders made weight for their five-round main event. All other fighters also made weight, with the exception of Saimon Oliveira, who missed the bantamweight limit by eight pounds. Coming in at 144 pounds for his fight against Luan Lacerda, the fight is likely off, although no announcement has been made yet.
Charles Oliveira (35-11, 1 NC) is looking to rebound from a brutal knockout loss to Ilia Topuria in June in what was likely the 35-year-old’s last crack at the lightweight belt he once held. “Do Bronxs” is still dangerous, as recent wins over Michael Chandler and Beneil Dariush have shown, but defeats to Topuria, Arman Tsarukyan and Islam Makhachev have shown his ceiling. The Brazilian will look to turn back the clock in front of his supportive fans, and he officially weighed 156 pounds for the main event.
Meanwhile, Gamrot (25-3, 1 NC) has won four of his last five fights. “Gamer” rebounded from a split decision defeat to Dan Hooker by beating Ludovit Klein in his last outing. Other key wins over Rafael dos Anjos, Rafael Fiziev and Jalin Turner have cemented the Polish fighter as a contender. The 34-year-old stepped on the scales at 156 pounds on the dot.
UFC Rio will air in its entirety on ESPN+. Prelims kick off at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT, while the main card begins at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.
