UFC Vegas 23 bonuses: Mackenzie Dern’s sharp submission earns extra $50K

Mackenzie Dern’s submission game is money. Literally.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace earned her third UFC Performance of the Night bonus in her past four appearances on Saturday with a surgical first-round armbar submission of the returning Nina Nunes. Dern earned an extra $50,000 for her efforts, as did fellow performance bonus winner Mateusz Gamrot and Fight of the Night winners Julian Marquez and Sam Alvey.

Gamrot, a champion at both 145 and 155 pounds in Poland’s KSW promotion, scored his first UFC victory and first UFC finish in his lightweight bout against Scott Holtzman. In the second round, Gamrot cracked Holtzman straight across the chin with a right hand, which led to the finish. Gamrot also won a Fight of the Night bonus in a losing effort against Guram Kutateladze when he made his UFC debut this past October.

This is the second Fight of the Night award for Marquez and just the first for Alvey, a veteran of 21 UFC bouts. Marquez put the pressure on Alvey from the opening bell and while Alvey put on a game performance firing back throughout the contest, he eventually succumbed to a flurry of strikes and was eventually choked unconscious in round two.

Marquez has now won three of his first four UFC fights, winning post-fight bonuses in each of his victories.
