On any other night, the trilogy bout between Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier would’ve been a slam dunk selection for “Fight of the Night.”
On Saturday, the five-round battle in the UFC 318 headliner was bypassed in a favor of a preliminary middleweight clash between Brendan Allen and Marvin Vettori for a $50,000 bonus. A backstage video shows Holloway sharing news of the snub with Poirier.

Their third meeting included a pair of knockdowns and a combined 207 significant strikes landed. Ultimately, Holloway retained his BMF title with a unanimous decision triumoh at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans on Saturday night.
Holloway Ribs UFC Boss for Bonus Selection
“I hope you guys gave s—t to Dana [White],” Holloway quipped at the post-fight press conference. “How the hell did we not get ‘Fight of the Night?’ What is he thinking? Come on, Dana.”
Holloway vs. Poirier wasn’t the only overlooked candidate for “Fight of the Night” honors. A main card welterweight clash between Daniel Rodriguez and Kevin Holland was also lauded as a potential “Fight of the Year” candidate by some observers.
